Rug 'n' Ruin, 2010, hand-made wool rug, 55x110cm
(installation on low-level black plinth for shop shop exhibition)

Jo Mitchell continues her text-based work for shop shop with this new piece which, literally and metaphorically 'weaves' together ideas around the history of (the) site, the possibility of the redundancy of consumerism and 'text as consumable object'. For this exhibition in an old carpet shop, Mitchell - adopting her familiar gothic aesthetic - has made a text-rug which, spelling out the word 'ruin', perhaps challenges the fetishization of both art and consumerist objects.
